Earl Shaffer, the first person to ever thru-hike the Appalachian Trail, was also a WWII veteran who wrote beautiful prose and poetry about his experiences both in the war and on the trail. Find yourself absorbed into his writing about Trail life 70 years ago, during his 1948 hike, and read about his life both on and off-trail! Also included are books by some wonderfully eloquent writers about their own experiences on the Appalachian and other treks.
